Morning Dove with pair of nestling just before crows pilaged/killed them from this nest on an airconditioner unit.

Spring is here. Song birds, Robins, Cardinals, Orioles, Morning Doves are nesting. Where are their young? With this new life it becomes an excellent food source for crows feeding on their young.

Everyone in Antigo area who feed song birds year around should know this is maintaining a great food source for crows. These winged predators yes they are predators! They do far more damage than hawks to song birds. In recent years there are so many they have become very bold to people with no fear of carring out their preadtory actions.

When a robin builds a nest in a tree it’s nestlings will not last long with this winged killer present. The robins young in our neighborhood only survive if they build nest on a porch or some other type of man made structure and even this will not stop these predators.

Crows have habit of perching in a tall tree watching below the activities of these song birds making their flights to foraging areas then returning to their nest to feed young. Once the crows have discovered where nests locations are by observation they raid the song birds nest to feed their young. Countless numbers of peaceful birds nesting are being ravaged by this menace. I have viewed pairs of crows working as a team. One will go to a nest picking out young robins and drop then to a second crow on the ground. Crows do not want the song birds eggs. They prefer to have the song birds feed their young for days and then raid the nest to feed their young.

Many of the long time Antigo residents have remarked there never were Crows in the city limits like now. One of the remarks was "In the 70’s and earlier the only time they ever seen a crow in the city it was if it was 1/4 mile up flying. Local residents in those times where not as tolerant of these neighborhood thugs. BB guns were more prevalent in years past. In Merrill, WI it is lawful to shoot a BB gun at them as a deterrent if your 16 years old or older.

At my home morning doves for four years attempted to nest on an air conditioner. Everything goes great with doves providing milk for their young. Both pair of Morning Doves feed their nestling crop milk or "pigeon milk," which is secreted in the crop lining. This milk is an extremely nutritious food with more protein and fat than dairy cows etc.,.

On a last note crows are refereed to as migratory birds but they are not migratory! This is another myth being promoted by our Wisconsin DNR. Wish there was a solution to maintaining a reduced population of this killer.

It has always been interesting to me to see the number house cats running about at night looking for prey in the city. Antigo has an ordinance against cats running off leash same as a dog. Maybe this ordinance should be enforced?

The double image is of newly born and close to leaving nest. These were the only two nestling birds to leave the nest successfully without the crows killing them. Now I have a robin on a building drain pipe. Crows will be watching their activity I’m sure.

Rent to own mobile homes are just as bad as the rentals, never judge a book by it's cover. Finding out that you are getting charged for things that the property owner should be resposible for. Continued late fees applied after payment arrangements have been made. Horrible record keeping.

I saw them a couple of times and they were fantastic. I think they are playing in Gleason on the 28th, and at the White Lake 4th of July celebration too. If you get the chance grab some friends an go see them. You wont be disappointed.

We have only been putting up obits since Dec. 2008. The Antigo Daily Journal only has the last 30 days. You can try searching the Social Security Death Index, or use the Antigo genealogy pages, although they do not include actual obits, just a listing of names. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~antigowis/ - Hope that helps.
